High oil corn has been around for decades.
It is corn that has a larger germ, which tends to have an oil and protein content higher than standard No. 2 yellow corn. Regular No. 2 yellow corn is usually in the mic 3%’s, and the high oil varieties will be over 6% oil. Newer, high oil ultra-varieties can be up to 9% oil.
Byron Seed and Brown Seed have been collaborating to develop improved high oil corn varieties that yield more, are higher in energy and protein; and, perform in the field. It is the added nutritional value that is a real plus for livestock producers. Cows, pigs and chickens all need minimum amounts of nutrients every day. What we don’t have in our home-grown feeds, we must buy. Growing high oil corn allows us to harvest more nutrients per acre, saving on purchased feed costs.
Newer high oil corn varieties have shown that they perform very well in the field. There is a trade-off in the corn kernel with high oil corn: more protein and oil content for a little less starch. Oil content is easily doubled and protein contents tend to be 10-20% higher, as compared to conventional corn varieties. That equals more total energy and protein per acre compared to conventional corn varieties and every bite the animals take give them more nutrients. For lactating sow and nursery pigs, high oil corn is a great fit. Also, for broilers, greater energy density leads to greater performance.
ByronPRO offers different options for high oil corn.
The first is a variety of Ultra-High-Oil. This corn variety has been getting extensive selection testing over the last ten years and now is the best high-oil corn available on the market. It should test close to 9% oil and 20% higher in protein. It is an excellent choice for any of your farm feed grain needs. It will bring more nutrients to the feed in a very digestible grain. Our field trials have shown it, with the right management, to yield close to conventional corn and stands great in the field.
Another option for those that want to add some high oil corn to their feed is what we call our SideKick Blend. It is composed of 75% of either 58C80 and 25% HOC Ultra or it will also be available in an RT of 75% 57T11 along with the HOC Ultra at 25%. The Side-Kick Blend offers the synergy of two hybrids working in sync to bring high performance in the field and a high performing 6% oil grain for your feed needs.
